This recommendation provides essential support to States resettling refugees and other humanitarian entrants is a fundamental purpose of IOM and its largest ongoing activity since its establishment in 1951. IOM assists its Member States in carrying out a variety of resettlement and other humanitarian admission schemes, many of which are well-established programmes, while some are ad hoc responses to specific forced migration crises.
