Guidelines on asbestos removal and guidelines on re-use of construction material post disaster

Breakout group 1

David Stone, ProAct, discussed the booklets on asbestos removal and the re-use of construction materials they are drafting. David Stone emphasised that asbestos remains a major problem often due to a lack of knowledge and capacity for removing or destroying it, or no alternative building materials being available. It was pointed out that aggregating resources can be used for large-scale construction waste removal. A request was made for further research and resources dedicated to dealing with asbestos and reusing other construction materials safely and efficiently.

Actions:

ProAct agreed to:

  • promote further research and resources on asbestos removal and the reuse of construction materials; and
  • create and lead a working group to review the draft guidelines.
