Situated Fabrication: from prefabricated to freely and locally fabricated shelter

The architectural forms of emergency shelters and the ways they are created play a significant role in the ability of their inhabitants to deal with their displacement and to perhaps feel, even temporarily, at home. While prefabricated shelters are often created for unknown locations and users, self-built and re-appropriated shelters are often created and re-adjusted according to the needs, capacities, and resources of their dwellers in their specific environment, and are therefore more suitable for their particular forms of inhabitation. This presentation will discuss different ways in which emergency shelters are built and adjusted by their dwellers and/or according to local fabrication techniques, suggesting that there is a need to continue developing situated and flexible solutions for displaced people.
