This policy brief and practical guidance for Pacific Nations in support of the Worldwide Initiative for Safe Schools is intended to support education authorities and disaster management officers to make decisions and allocate resources to meet shelter needs of the population, to protect children’s rights to safety and wellbeing, educational continuity, and to protect education sector investments. The principles acknowledge that in many disasters, schools are sometimes the best option for shelters, and that the focus should be on both protecting school infrastructure and preserving educational continuity.
