This paper has two broad objectives. First, it aims to review the scale and nature of the humanitarian challenge posed by extreme heat, both now and under future climate change scenarios. This analysis is captured in part one: ‘Five things humanitarians need to know about extreme heat.’ Second, it aims to outline the type of international humanitarian system that is best suited to respond to this challenge. This analysis is captured in part two: ‘Five steps to help prepare for the heatwaves of the future.’ This paper’s analysis was developed through a review of academic literature and publications by scientific, governmental, humanitarian and development organizations, and through interviews with relevant experts.
