Initiatives announced:
- Sphere shelter, settlements and non-food items chapter revision
Proposals were made for the upcoming revision of the Shelter, Settlements and Non-Food Items chapter of the Sphere Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Disaster Response. To participate in the ongoing review contact Graham Saunders: graham.saunders@ifrc.org
- Sphere environment, DRR and climate change chapter revision
A working group was formed around Sphere revisions on environment, DRR and climate change, led by Anita van Breda of WWF. To join, contact Anita.VanBreda@WWFUS.ORG
- IASC Urbanization Task Force

An progress update was presented on this initiative, which aims to be completed by SM09b
- ProAct Network final review of ‘A Brief Guide to the Asbestos in Emergencies’
A draft was distributed, and can be found on www.sheltercentre.org. The deadline for comments is Wednesday, 27th May, 2009, after which the final guildelines will be published, and available on www.proactnetwork.org and www.sheltercentre.org.
Projects under review:
- World Bank handbook on reconstruction
Progress was made towards harmonising the guiding principles in the forthcoming World Bank handbook on reconstruction and the OCHA/Shelter Centre transitional settlement and reconstruction guidelines
- Transitional settlement and reconstruction guidelines
Support was given to the six category terms for transitional reconstruction for non-displaced populations and for expanded inclusion of assistance methods in the final version of the transitional settlement and reconstruction guidelines. The final Review Meeting will take place on 1st July (see next item in this newsletter), before the publication of the guidelines by the UN later this year.

- Website of the construction group of the Swiss Humanitarian Aid
The website is open to all the humanitarian community active in the construction/reconstruction area: www.constructiongroup.ch
- The Built Environment Professions in Disaster Risk Reduction and Response Guide
The guide is intended to demonstrate the value of using built environment professionals more widely in disaster risk reduction and response and giving early attention to engaging the right expertise to address the problems of building, infrastructure and land. - Owner-Driven Reconstruction

- Sector Lecture: Shelter after Disaster, lessons learned from Pakistan, three years after the earthquake
Heiner Gloor of Swiss Solidarity and Shelter Centre delivered the Sector Lecture for SM09a, foucsing on lessons learnt from the Pakistan earthquake in 2005. The presentation, text of the speech and examples of construction manuals developed for Pakistan are available for download here.
